New York Baseball history outline or a example of baseball dominance.

Through the years there have been quite a few professional baseball teams in New York.  I plan on covering them more in-depth as time progresses but here is a outline of those teams starting with the National League in 1876.  World Series records for pre-1900 are in parenthesis.  Team records are also only for the years in New York.

1876-            NY Mutuals- NL    21-35  .375  0 Pennants  World Series Record 0-0

1877-            Brooklyn Hartfords-NL  31-27 .534  0 Pennants  WS Record  0-0

1883-1887     New York Metropolitans-AA  270-309  .466  1 Pennant  WS Record 0-1

1883-1957     New York Giants-NL   6067-4898 .553  16 Pennants  WS Record  5-9  (2-0)

1884-1957     Brooklyn Dodgers-AA,NL 5624-5280.516 13 Pennants WS Record 1-10(0-1-1)

1890-           Brooklyn Gladiators-AA  26-72  .265  0 Pennants  WS Record 0-0

1890            Brooklyn Wonders-PL  76-56 .576  0 Pennants  WS Record 0-0

1890            New York Giants-PL 74-57  .565  0 Pennants  WS Record 0-0

1903-Present New York Yankees-AL 9354-7082 .569 39 Pennants, WS Record 26-13

1914-1915     Brooklyn Tip-Tops-FL  147-159 .480  0 Pennants, WS Record 0-0

1962-present  New York Mets-NL 3585-3889 .480  4 Pennants, WS Record 2-2

That completes the outline historical facts about the MLB teams of New York city.  I will cover these teams in the future with the exception of the current NL New York team for you can go to the MTR blog to read about them there.

While the most successful of the NY teams has been the Bombers, the Giants and Dodgers were pretty impressive also if you look at their winning pct and the number of pennants they won through the years.  The Giants particularly were tough for their winning pct. would have given them a average of 85 wins in a 154 game season.  The Dodgers would have averaged just under 80 wins in a 154 game season.  Both teams ran roughshod over the NL bringing a total of 29 pennants together to New York in 85 years before they left after the 1957 season.  If you add the Yankees to the mix you add 23 more pennants for a total of 52 pennants in 85 years by the three teams.  Now that is what you call dominant baseball!  Of course, adding the old AA Mets from the 1880's you can add one more pennant for 53 pennants.  The Mets played for 5 seasons and won one pennant which is pretty good!

But, if you want to look at it from 1901-1957 the three New York teams won 46 pennants in 57 years!!!  Now those were some days to be a baseball fan in NY!!!

Since 1958 after the Giants and Dodgers left town the Yankees have won 16 pennants and 9 World Championships in 50 years.  Adding the Mets from 1962 New York in the last 50 years has 20 pennants and 11 World Championships.  That is excellent for one city.  Lets hope New York can return to its MLB dominance in a pre-1958 form soon! Of course, here at the Bronx Daily we hope its the Bombers who do all the winning, but if our city rivals win the big one we will give them a cheer also.  :)
GO YANKEES!!!!
