MTRstlouis.com has cutting edge articles, podcasts, and videos from around the St Louis area written by the best journalists and the area’s most passionate sports fans.
In the early parts of the 2013 season, a lot of talk has been made about the starts of the Toronto Blue Jays (16-24, .400) and Los Angeles Angels (15-24, .385). In the New York area, talk has been about the struggling Mets, who currently sit at 14-22, .389. Though much was expected from the Jays and Angels, the before mentioned teams have to lose a lot of games to be considered the worst in baseball. Currently, the Houston Astros sit at 10-30, .250 while the Miami Marlins are 11-28, .282. If the two teams keep up the pace, they have a chance to finish amongst the worst in the history of MLB.
To put it in perspective, the Astros are directly on pace to match the 1962 New York Mets in regards to winning percentage. Of course, the Mets of...

Mets Series Matchup Report:
New York Mets Career statistics vs. Lance Lynn (0-1 - 3.86 ERA - 3K's)
Phils scored four runs in the eighth inning as they beat the redbirds, 7-4, splitting the four games set with the Cardinals.
The Cardinals took a quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first as, with one man out, Matt Carpenter hits a solo home run, his second home run of the season. The Phils tied the game up at one-all in their half of the first as, with runners on the corners, and with nobody out, Chase Utley hits an RBI single, knocking in Jimmy Rollins, who had started the inning off with a triple, while sending John Mayberry, Jr., who had just walked, on to third base. The Phils then took the lead one batter later as Ryan Howard hits a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Mayberry, giving the Phils a 2-1 lead. The Cardinals tied the game up at two-all in...
@MLB sources report that Adam Wainwright and the St Louis @Cardinals agree to a 5 year, $97.5M contract extension through 2018.
The two sides were negotiating quickly as a self imposed deadline to have a contract or wait until after the season was imposed by Wainwright.
The 31 right hander is 80-48 with a 3.15 ERA in his career. He went 14-13 with a 3.94 ERA last season after missing all of 2011 recovering from Tommy John surgery.
With the loss of Chris Carpenter, this signing was essential for the Cardinals. It is a fair deal for both sides and gives the Red Birds a bonafide ace for the foreseeable future.

As I have reached number 11 in my countdown previews, it has come down to the last team I have on the outside looking in. If you have followed my previous previews, you see what teams I have in the playoffs. Let the discussion continue, as these predictions are my own. I have not depended on opinions of others and certainly have not used the standard reference of baseball prospectus. The St Louis Cardinals made the postseason in spite of the loss of manager Tony LaRussa, star slugger Albert Pujols and renown pitching coach Dave Duncan. They battled the eventual World Series Champion San Francisco Giants to a seven game NLCS.
The Cardinals have a strong core coming back this season but will likely be without ace Chris Carpenter for the entire season. This sounds like deja vu, as...
Today, we hit the NL Central. Can the Cubs start down the road to respectability? Will the Cardinals miss Chris Carpenter? Are the Pirates ready to put together a full season? And what impact does the loss of Houston have on expectations for the five teams that remain? Tune in at Eastern/2 Pacific and chime in on Facebook or @doviddobin on Twitter....
At long last, we have completed our team previews. Well, we did the best we could with player movement, but obviously guys like Michael Bourn and Kyle Lohse won’t be seen here.
As we said at the beginning of these, the numbers you saw throughout these are the projections of the individual writer and not necessarily what you’ll see in our Draft Kit, which comes out on February 18.
We’re thankful to you readers who continued to read our previews and offer your feedback. In case you missed any teams, here’s all of Major League Baseball.
Former Cy Young and two-time World Series champion winner Chris Carpenter may have to retire due to nerve damage in his hand. The 37-year-old St. Louis Cardinal pitcher is almost certain to miss the upcoming 2013 MLB season and he may not be able to return to the mound at all. John Mozeliak, the Cardinals’ general manager, said Carpenter is still suffering from the same problem that saw him miss the majority of last season, but he hasn’t retired and will also be seeking additional medical opinions.
However, according to Mozeliak the future doesn’t look too bright for the star pitcher and feels that it’s unlikely he’ll return. Carpenter’s started his career with the Toronto Blue Jays back in 1997 and he has a career record of 144-94 along with an ERA of 3.76. He left the Blue Jays after six seasons and has spent nine more with the Cardinals. Carpenter had an excellent season in 2005 by going...
The St Louis Cardinals today announced that RHP Chris Carpenter will likely miss the entire 2013 season due to continuing issues in his shoulder due to his thoracic outlet syndrome. General Manager John Mozeliak broke the news today as Carpenter has had problems throwing during his offseason program for the second straight offseason. After a similar announcement last year, Carpenter returned to make three starts last September as well as three starts in the postseason for the Cardinals. Carpenter's career is one of what could have been as he has missed a ton of time due to injury.
Assuming Carpenter's 2013 season is finished before it got started, it will mark the fifth full season Carpenter will make 3 or less starts in. It is a shame, as Carpenter has been one of the top pitchers in baseball when healthy. His...
