Boring and Tame, Just Not the Same

Change and I don't get along too well. I remember when the Cardinals introduced the Sunday home game alternate cap -- the navy blue one with the red bill and the profiled bird. I couldn't sleep for weeks. WHY?!?! WHY ARE THEY DOING THIS!?!? WHAT IS WRONG WITH THE REGULAR CAP!?!?! Things are better now; but living in Chicago, I became quite used to the kind of daily drama inherent in a city where Ozzie Guillen is employed. Now, with him gone, life is just... boring? I mean, Adam Dunn is hitting. Jake Peavy is pitching. The Cell hasn't caught on fire. What fun is that? I miss the good old days -- the days when the city stopped for the Crosstown Rivalry, the Windy City Classic. I miss seeing Sweet Lou bump bellies with umpires, AJ Pierzynski gettin' cold cocked by Michael Barrett, listening to drunk frat boys explain...

Miami Overheats

DATELINE: HUMOR! D-Wade’s grade in Coach Erik Spoelstra’s basketball class has dropped him to F-Wade. During a meltdown game that resembled something this side of Chernobyl, the Miami Heat showed all their true colors when the costar of the team attacked the coach. When your Big Three is down to chokers and flatliners, your coach may be next to implode. If the team had taken on the opponents from Indiana with the same ferocity shown their braintrust, there might have been a game. Alas, poor Miami. They have lost the Lizard King, Chris Bosh, and their big man LeBron can’t shoot when the pressure is on him, and now the final member of their Stooges is trying to dope slap the coach. For a team that has accomplished nothing much over the past two years, the turmoil on the court is almost as palpable as a drive-by shooting. Spoelstra noted after the game that these sort of dust ups are common as tsetse flies...

No. 48 team gets Hendrick first Pit Crew Challenge win

Both the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota team and the No. 48 Hendrick Motorsports Chevrolet team made their ways to the finals of the NASCAR Sprint Pit Crew Challenge at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte on Thursday night to create a rematch from the championship round from a year ago. After a flawless stop, the No. 48 team took the 2012 win, defeating the two-time defending champion No. 11 team. The No. 48 crew's win was the first in the history of the event for Hendrick Motorsports. "These guys have stepped up to the challenge," No. 48 crew chief Chad Knaus said. As a result of the victory, the No. 48 team will have first pick during pit selection for Saturday night's Sprint All-Star Race. The No. 48 team claimed $80,675 in prize money, and the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, the foundation of the No. 48 team's driver Jimmie Johnson, received a $9,169 donation from the NASCAR Foundation. Twenty-four NASCAR Sprint Cup...

5 in a Row!

Winning 5 games in a row seemed an impossible task for the Phillies until now. Their longest win streak of the season previous to this one was only 2 games. They have also gone above the .500 mark for the first time since the first game of the year. Even having Roy Halladay on the mound has been no guarantee of a win this year as the offense has underperformed. Against the Cubs on Thursday night, Halladay finally got some run support and had a good game himself as well. Over 8 innings, Halladay allowed 3 runs, 2 of which were solo homers. But he was even hotter at the plate, going 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Only 3 other Phillies had multi-hit nights, One of those guys was...

Not-So-Rapid Reaction: Blue Jays 4, Yankees 1

The Yankees could have made major headway in the AL East this week. With a pair of games each against the Baltimore Orioles and Toronto Blue Jays, this was their chance to pick up some games on their competition. Instead, they head home in shambles as they prepare to open the interleague portion of their schedule. Last night, Drew Hutchison became the latest first-timer to put the Yankees bats on lockdown, and the Bombers were sent back across the border with a 4-1 loss to the Blue Jays. Their third consecutive loss was their third straight offensive struggle. Hutchison allowed just the one run on five hits and four walks over the course of six innings. The Yankees had no trouble putting men on; their issues came down to an inability to get those runners home. They went 0-8 with runners in scoring position, which indicates, again, that these offensive struggles are more a matter of circumstance than inability. Still,...

Ravens promote DeCosta

The Ravens adjusted the structure of their front office as soon as Eric DeCosta began interviewing for open positions with other organizations. DeCosta then took his name off the market and now we know why. Today, the Ravens announced they have promoted DeCosta to assistant general manager. DeCosta was the director of player personnel, but now is officially general manager Ozzie Newsome's right-hand man. "When we extended Eric’s contract earlier this year, we changed his title to assistant GM,” Newsome said. “As Eric continues to grow in the personnel department, he is becoming a vital part of the decision-making process.” Congratulations to DeCosta....
