49ers’ Kyle Williams receives death threats

49ers’ punt returner Kyle Williams, who botched a punt and fumbled on another return against the Giants Sunday, has been receiving death threats on Twitter. Williams was filling in for the injured Ted Ginn Jr.

Williams had a punt return hit his knee and was recovered by the Giants at the start of the fourth quarter. This set the Giants in great field position and led to a Giants go-ahead touchdown to make it 17-14. 49ers’ kicker David Akers made a field goal with about six minutes left in the fourth quarter to tie it up, which led to overtime.

In overtime, Williams fumbled on a punt return which was recovered by the Giants. Giants’ kicker Lawrence Tynes kicked a game-winning field goal on that turnover.

Since then, Kyle Williams has been receiving threats via Twitter. Fans and critics have been telling him evil and cruel things with some tweets even threatening his family.

We can all admit that he made two huge mistakes that probably cost the 49ers a Super Bowl apperance, but these immature fans need to stop it. Sending negative messages and threats to a man who already feels bad enough is completely insensitive and cold-hearted.

I know people sometimes get caught up in the heat and feelings of the game, but the comments that have been made are inexcusable. Everyone knows Williams had a bad day. Instead of condemning him, why not console him?

I was glad to see positive, supportive messagess from many people, including Deion Sanders and Kurt Warner. The supportive messages outnumbered the negative ones, but the threats and negative comments are the ones that stick with you.

THE MORNING AFTER — VICTOR CRUZ

Three buttermilk pancakes, four slices of hickory smoked bacon, one sliced Florida orange and one cup of simmering hazelnut coffee.

By CARY WALDMAN

New York Giants wide receiver Victor Cruz was without a doubt the biggest surprise of the year for a franchise that has been full of so many surprises in it last five games – all wins – three of which were in the playoffs, the last two coming on the road in extremely hostile environments.

In two weeks and in Indianapolis, Ind, the Giants will be making their second Super Bowl appearance in four years against the same high-powered New England Patriots squad it defeated in 2008 for the Vince Lombardi Trophy in what was considered a major upset.

Cruz is a second year pro who went undrafted in 2010 after a successful career at the University of Massachusetts.

He played in just three games during his rookie season, with no catches and a ton of frustration.

There were no high expectations for him coming into this year, but after several injuries to the Giants wide receiving corps, Cruz took full advantage of the opportunity, much like he did in New York’s 20-17 overtime NFC championship triumph Sunday over the San Francisco 49ers on the West Coast.

Cruz caught 10 passes, most of them in the first half, for 142 yards.

Many were accomplished in spectacular acrobatic fashion.

Cruz only started nine of 16 games this season, but wound up making the Pro Bowl as a backup after catching a team high 82 (ninth in the NFL) passes and posting a team season record 1,536 receiving yards (third in the NFL).

He also garnered a team high nine touchdowns, including another team record; his brilliant 99-yard catch and run against the New York Jets in week 16.

He averaged a team high 18.7 yards per catch.

Cruz had 25 catches of at least 20 yards and nine over 40 yards. He was especially special on third downs, and converted 59 of his catches into first downs.

He was a superstar in the fourth quarter, something that enabled the Giants to pull close games out late.

Of course, he has quickly meshed with star quarterback Eli Manning as his go-to-guy.

Look for Cruz to again be a main cog in New York’s offense against the Patriots, who possessed the next-to-last rated defense in the league during the regular season.

Cruz may not yet be among the greatest undrafted players of all-time, but if he continues his destructive tactics against opposing defenses during his career, he may eventually get that acknowledgement.

Here’s my list of some of the top undrafted NFL players of all-time.

1) Quarterback Kurt Warner, Green Bay Packers (practice squad), St. Louis Rams, New York Giants  and Arizona Cardinals.

2) Quarterback Warren Moon, Houston Oilers, Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and Kansas City Chiefs.

3) Defensive tackle John Randle, Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks.

4) Tight end Antonio Gates, San Diego Chargers.

5) Running back Marion Motley, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers.

6) Cornerback “Night Train Lane”, Los Angeles Rams, Chicago Cardinals and Detroit Lions.

7) Kicker Adam Vinatieri, New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts.

8) WR Rod Smith, Denver Broncos.

9) Wide Receiver Wayne Chrebet, New York Jets.

10) Quarterback Tony Romo, Dallas Cowboys.

It’s starting to smell like a Super Bowl XLII rematch

Helmet catches anyone? Hakeem Nicks certainly obliged when he caught a 37 yard Hail Mary pass in the end zone with 0:00 on the clock in the second quarter to give the Giants a 20-10 lead over the once unstoppable Green Bay Packers. The Packers shot themselves in the foot all day; they looked rusty [...] Read more »
